| Description | 2008-8-20 | eE | A single-edged iron dirk (short blade), well-preserved and missing the lower section of the tang and handle. One rivet is preserved. It remains inserted through the tang of the blade with one end slightly bent and peened - as a nail head might be. The blade portion is square on one end and is sharper on the other. The edge no longer remains and heavy pitting and flaking from iron oxidation covers the entire surface of the piece. The point is rounded at the top. The shape of the blade is slightly bent - this form is especially visible in the contour of the square edge of the blade. A triangular break at the end of the blade near the preserved rivet indicates the piece was once longer and most likely consisted of at least one more rivet, as a minimum of two rivets are necessary to hold a handle in place. As a point of interest, a small cylindrical iron rivet section was found in A20 (A20.27) with nearly the same diameter as that found preserved on this piece.
