Brief Overview

The cross-horizon typology of base types found on this page is designed to illustrate handle types found across all time periods at Mozan. Base codes are assigned when the preserved portion of the sherd is insufficient to assign a shape, or in cases when the base is used to further define or explain a particular shape. Not all types are currently illustrated. The lexicon gives the complete listing of base codes and their associated definition. In addition, a list of shape codes including bases is further defined on the shapes-codes page.

There are a wide range of types within the Mozan corpus of bases. Many of the types are fairly common, such as flat bases, round bases, and pointed bases. Other common types include ring bases, disk bases, and footed bases which are further subdivided by their individual characteristics such as concave or convex, high or low, etc.
