It is useful to consider two examples in the field of Mesopotamian studies where a complex authorial situations: they are as eloquent as they are authoritative.
The Chicago Assyrian Dictionary (volume 17/3) lists:
on the title page
● an editorial board consisting of five indivduals (two of them deceased),
and, in the front matter page:
● an editor-in-charge,
● two associate editors,
● twelve individuals who have provided assistance, and
● four manuscript editors.

The Reallexikon der Assyriologie (volume 12) lists (without indication of whether thay are deceased):
● two founders of the project,
● three individuals who "continued" the project,
● one individual as the editor,
● seven individuals as contributors, and
● two individuals for the "Redaktion."
