2. IDENTIFICATION

Designation

Roster Date Author Record
Description (summary) 2010-09-13 jW This fill had many of the same characteristics of the baqaya above. It was hard, came off in sheets, contained calcite inclusions, and was reddish in color. It is posssible that it is the remains of a prior glacis. It is also possible that it is fill to transition from a flat surface to the sloping surface of the f109 glacis. Due to the surface hardness, we could not determine the orientation of the relatively large number of sherds recovered. (Random orientation would imply fill or coating, while a horizontal orientation would imply accumulation above a floor.) In the far NE corner there is a N-S line of baqaya, which may be bricks. [Input: U914JW.j]
2010-10-07 jW Fill beneath and sealed by the baqaya glacis, f109 and f50 (exposed in MZ19 and MZ20). It covered the what most likely was a previous glacis, f368, which in turn covered the major LC3 wall segment, f348. Ceramics within were all from the Late Chalcolithic 3 period, but the time of deposition may be from the Later Early Dynastic period when the revetment wall, f11, was built. Fill, f346, may have been applied as part of a remodel of the BA Temple mound using soil already there. [Input: V206JW.j]

3. STRATIGRAPHY

Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Argument 2010-09-14 jW One issue with this feature is whether it is a floor accumulation above f348, or fill added to change the shape the BA temple mound from steps to a slope. Two observations indicate that it is a fill.
First, pavement f348 is relatively level while the thickness of f346 increases from south to north, matching the shape of the extant mound.
Second, the orientation of sherds we could identify in situ were randomly oriented, the largest being aligned vertically. [Input: U914JW2.j]

Strata (included within phase) 2012-10-07 jW s650bJ3B [Input: WX07JW.j]
Stratigraphic reasons of assignment 2012-10-07 jW Covered by the baqaya glacis, f109 and f50, which because of their association (protects the top from erosion) with the main revetment wall, f11, are dated to the EDIII period. f346 may be either the remains of earlier glacis or fill to make a smooth transition from an older glacis, f368, to f109. This stratum assignment assumes that it is EDIII fill. [Input: WX07JW.j]
Typological reasons for assignment 2012-10-07 jW As in many features in this part of the excavation unit, the ceramics within the feature date to the Late Chalcolithic period. [Input: WX07JW.j]
Other reasons, reservations, qualifications 2012-10-07 jW Our current understanding of the dichotomy is that except for the baqaya, which is clean sub-soil taken from outside the tell, most of the material used for fills ws obtained from the BA temple mound itself, which at the time of construction of the extant revetment wall and glacis was covered with soil containing LC ceramics, ahaving not been occupied between the periods. [Input: WX07JW.j]
Review of ceramics 2010-09-13 jW A preliminary analysis of the ceramics by mKB, dated this feature to the LC3 period. [Input: U914JW.j]
2010-09-15 mKB Dates to Late Chalcolithic 3 [Input: U915MKB.j]
