feature that appeared in the process of removing the N baulk of k168. Below the topsoil, 35 cm below the present surface, at the junction of k167,168,217,218, is a horizontal layer of stones that lies EW. There is a "headstone" slab at the W end which appears to consist of a single rock that is higher than the rest. The assemblage was obviously plastered and is flat except for the rise at the W end. This is quite adjacent to the layer of bricks, f36 in k218 and more or less at the same level. At this point I wonder if this was a fairly late structure used for some water related purpose. It could potentially be the well preserved top of a burial that is entirely within the baulk at this point. [Input: C7-3.J] |
