Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2004-06-21 jw close inspection of k22 after removal of backfill, f166, indicates that the plastic sheeting and the soil above it probably were the remnants of a backdirt pile and not a covered excavation from previous seasons. [Input: O621JW.j]
2004-07-14 jw Began excavating the topsoil/backfill from this locus. [Input: O715JW.j]
2004-07-18 jw Contined to remove the topsoil/gully wash from this locus. [Input: O718JW2.j]
2004-07-19 jw Continued to excavate the topsoil/excavation dirt/gully wash. [Input: O719JW.j]
2004-07-20 jw Finished excavating the topsoil and began to excavate the more ancient gully wash. Found several large stones along the north and south baulks. [Input: O720JW1.j]
2004-07-21 jw continued to excavate accumulation, f277, (probably ancient gullywash) beneath the topsoil. [Input: O723JW3.j]
2004-07-22 jw Continued to excavate the gully wash below topsoil. Removed the length of hand-finished clay pipe, i188, to the house. The soil began to become more red in the last pick run and we will consider changing features when excavations resume on O725. [Input: O723JW1.j]
2004-07-25 jw Finished excavating this locus after encountering a level surface with a number of pebbles scattered throughout, f288. It probably is a layer formed by the action of ancient gully wash, but it is of adequate depth to provide a frame this season for the investigation of the abi entrance to the east. [Input: O725JW.j]
2004-07-26 dc Section drawing [Input: O726DC.j]
2004-07-27 jw Began to carefully excavate the east baulk of k22 to determine if there was a link between the large stone, f296, in k21 and a possible supporting structure just to its west. (There surely has to be something holding the stone in place to resist the washing action of the modern and ancient gullies which slope sharply down to the west that we observed in the excavation of k22, k23, k24, and k25.) [Input: O727JW2.j]
2004-07-28 jw Removed the last remnants of accumulation, f277, from the east baulk. Below there were three features at the same elevation: a red accumulation, f307, to the south, a grayish accumlation filled with gravel (and containing two modern food cans) to the north, and, in the middle, a stone and sherd surface, f305. [Input: O802JW.j]
Strategy (projected or implemented) 2004-07-18 jw Will move a less experienced crew here to continue to remove the modern and ancient gully wash. [Input: O718JW2.j]
2004-07-28 jw With the concurrence of gb, we will stop excavating here for the season. There is not enough time to explore the relationship between the surface, f305 and the stone, f296. Although it is clear that f308 is modern gully wash, we cannot say to what extent it may have eroded f305 and whatever structural mechanism supported the large stone, f296. If we dug more in this restricted area in the hours remaining this season, there is a good chance that we would loosen f296 and destroy whatever stratigraphic links with the abi entrance remain. [Input: O802JW.j]
