Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2004-07-01 jw opened this locus and made several pickruns through topsoil/recent gully wash. [Input: O701JW1.j]
2004-07-04 jw continued to clear the gully wash from the entire locus. At the end of the day it was level. It is in the deepest part of the gully and according to the assistant guard is in an area where we have had spoils piles in the past. Will declare a new feature for the first pick run in the morning. [Input: O704JW.j]
2004-07-05 jw entire surface leveled against the slope of the hill. Assigned new feature to the accumulation below, f204. In the last pick run of the day, uncovered a large sheet of plastic, probably used to isolate a spoils pile from past excavations. [Input: O705JW.j]
2004-07-06 jw Continued to dig without encountering anything but modern gully wash. No immediate promise for change. [Input: O706JW3.j]
2004-07-11 jw Continued to remove ancient gully wash from what the section indicates may have been the deepest part of it. There is still about 100cm difference in the elevations of the current work in this locus and the stone and sherd paving, f233, in k25, about 5m downslope to the west. [Input: O711JW1.j]
2004-07-12 jw Continued to excavate deeply into locus. Throughout the day, began to encounter large and small stones, randomly scattered throughout, without any apparent organization. Designated a new feature for the accumulation, f250, surrounding the largest concentration of stones in the north half of the locus. Upon scraping, the accumulation in the south half, still undesignated, seems more bricky. [Input: O712JW.j]
2004-07-13 jw beginning to see a clear differentiation in accumulations in k25. In the SE corner, f251, strong brown in color, and granular texture, contrasts with f250 in the other parts of the locus, which shows signs of interaction of soil with water - hard crusty surfaces with soft pockets of fine soil. [Input: O713JW.j]
2004-07-14 jw Continued to excavate and level the entire locus. At the start of the day we could differentiate a reddish layer in the SE corner from a water-influenced brown accumulation in the rest of the locus. At the end of the day, all quadrants seemed uniform in color and texture, so we assigned a new feature to this accumulation, f255. The elevation was measured as 8113cm, equivalent to that of the floor, f253, in k14 diretly to the NW whose elevation is 8109cm. A number of loose stones and pebbles were removed from this accumulation. [Input: O714JW.j]
2004-07-14 jw Spent another frustrating day excavating in this locus, which is in the channel of the ancient and modern gully wash. Despite occasional moments of homogeneity, there has been a clear differentiation in either soil color or accumulation content between the SE corner and the rest of the locus, which generally have been assigned separate features. Each feature has had interesting artifacts including beads and animal figurines. [Input: O715JW.j]
2004-07-26 dc Section drawing [Input: O726DC.j]
2004-07-27 jw Removed the east baulk. [Input: O727JW2.j]
Strategy (projected or implemented) 2004-07-14 jw jw recommends that we stop excavating here, perhaps for the season and proceed on the master plan to follow the existing phase 3 and later deposits eastward in squares k4, k3, k2, k1, k13, k12 and k11, to the entrance of the abi. The strong influence of the gully may also mean that we may not see any architecture from later phases in the part of the sacral precinct which lies to the west directly in front of the abi entrance. Time Sequencing

Roster Date Author Record
Notes on time sequencing 2004-07-14 jw The thought occurs to jw that we are nearing the stratigraphic point where the gully first began to form, presumably in Phase 3 when the walls of the palace began to deteriorate and material higher and to the east began to be carried to the west by successive rains. [Input: O715JW.j]
