General notes on photos 2001-09-03 jlw this is a continuation of the working photographs of v158, which concentrate on the excavation of kiln, a31, along the south baulk of k13. The top northern quarter of this pit kiln was inadvertantly excavated in the week before, at least in part because the most visible diagnostic element from above, the wall opposite the air chamber, was hidden in the unexcavated north baulk of the adjoining locus 14. This view shows the unexcavated southern half as well as the half pit to the north were the contents have been excavated. It shows the ovelying accumulation, f56, and the first layer within the kiln, f345, which consists of the same kind of material, soil mixed with the byproducts of pottery production. v159a is an overhead that shows the lower northern quarter of the kiln, including several whole vessels that apparently were left in the kiln after the last firing. v159b thru v159e are successive closeups of the bowls, i213, i214, i215, which undoubtly were at the intersection of the residue of the last firing, f347, and the first accumulation after abandonment, f345.
