1. OVERVIEW

Roster Date Author Record
Summary 2008-09-12 lR similar to k12, this area was left unclear finding the square covered in f22 ash that formed an "L" shape abutting f98 bricky mass. Within the bricky mass a semi-circular area contained several bricks set within ash and appears to be associated with some kind of burning as the black charcoal stains would suggest. In conjunction with my interpretation of k12, this area looks like a production space, outdoor that repeatedly produced ash. Tannur fragments were found in the area of f98 and f103 and extending to the east to k3, a complete tannur was found suggesting the production space continued through from k12, k2, and k3. Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2008-07-14 lR finished excavating the topsoil and found a change in the soil matrix, similar to what we found in k12. A more compact surface emerged mixed with soft soil, bricky material, and charcoal fragments, first emerging in the southern half of the locus. A new feature number was assigned and 10 cm removed from the entire locus. [Input: S714LR.j]
2008-07-15 lR Excavated 10-15 cms of f10 and found f16, compact layer at the end of the day in the northeast corner. [Input: S715LR.j]
2008-07-16 lR concentrated our efforts in the western half of the locus that is higher in elevation in order to define the stones f13, f15. 15cms was removed from the entire western half of k2 with two pottery lots created that separated soil in the north and to the south. The eastern half of the locus is more excavated than the west, approximately 30 centimeters. This arbitrary section was cleaned today with nothing seen in profile. [Input: S716LR.j]
2008-07-17 lR this morning the northwest corner was excavated down 5cms. The area showed several brick faces but resulted in only broken and eroded bricks mixed with the surrounding matrix so was removed we then continued to excavate f14, which remains concentrated in western half of the locus. Approximately 10 cms was removed, defining f15 better, a medium sized stone with no other features associated with it. While excavating the soil began to shift from a lighter bricky material to softer and ashier. A new feature was assigned, f22. [Input: S718LR.j]
2008-07-19 lR excavated 10cms of f22 to level the feature. Patches of compact brick melt surfaced while excavating f22 but does not form a complete surface. These patches were left in place. [Input: S719LR.j]
2008-07-20 lR The east section was drawn, photographed, and removed today under f8 topsoil. f27 continued under the baulk, connecting k2 and k3 together. [Input: S720LR.j]
2008-07-21 lR Square drawn by eE today [Input: S721LR2.j]
2008-07-22 lR Starting in the locus by removing f27 brick melt, found only in the extreme east and west. Below, ash was found f22 with several stones and a large tannur fragment surfacing in the northeast corner of k2. We then proceeded to remove 5cms of the ash from the eastern area of the locus in order to level the locus (this area is higher in elevation than the west). [Input: S722LR.j]
2008-07-23 lR Removed 5-10 cms of ash in the entire locus, focusing on leveling out the area and removing patches of compact bricky material. The large stone in the west section, f12 was finally removed today along with the pillar of soil holding it pedastooled. Some fragments of carbonized wood were found in the southern corner of the locus, collected as a specimen. [Input: S723LR.j]
2008-07-30 lR north section was drawn and photographed this morning and the south section on A18's side was photographed. The baulk was divided into sections, removing first the topsoil then the accumulation below f10, followed by f22, ash. Carbonized wood was found in f22, along with 7 scorpions. The entire day was spent removing this baulk. [Input: S731LR.j]
2008-08-02 lR Started to remove the north section of k2 this morning beginning with f8 topsoil. [Input: S802LR.j]
2008-08-03 lC After breakfast we finished removing the northern baulk then continued to remove part of the ashy layer f22, making the east and the west sections of the locus straight and even. [Input: S803LC.j]
2008-08-04 lR removed 10 cm from f22, ash in the southern half of the locus. [Input: S804LR.j]
2008-08-05 lC Today we continued to excavate the ashy layer f22, uncovering in part a harder and compact layer brown in color. Almost at the and of the morning we found a big amount of small bones, according to lR probably pertinent to a bird or to a rodent, and we used a sifter to take all the small bones. [Input: S805LC.j]
2008-08-05 lR Continued from yesterday to remove the ash f22 in the south area and level the area out. The western side continues to be more compact, pinkish in color but irregular in shape. This surface has been left pedastooled, focusing on removing the ash. [Input: S805LR2.j]
2008-08-09 lR On S807 we reached the elevation of A18's pebble and sherd pavement in k12 and decided to stop excavating the ash. We then moved into k2, excavated f22 down 15 cm to reach the same elevation as k12 and A18. By the end of the day, this was achieved. Some small patches remain in the southeast corner that will be removed tomorrow. [Input: S809LR.j]
2008-08-10 lR Yesterday we stopped excavating f22, leaving the area at the roughly the same elevation as A18 to the immediate south. Today we spent the morning cleaning k2 to define f98. More ash was noticed on the surface of f98, assuming it was f22 that partially covered f98, we began to remove 10 cm. The area then shifted from ashy to concentrated areas of burning with larger inclusions of charcoal, white ash, black stains, pottery, and tannur fragments bounded by f98 presumably bricks or bricky mass in the north. This new feature, f103 was photographed today and 5 cm removed. [Input: S810LR2.j]
Strategy (projected or implemented) 2008-07-12 lr We plan to open this locus tomorrow and will start by removing a berm that crosses k1,k2, and k3. The north section of A18 will also be cleaned in order to see the stratigraphic profile. [Input: S712LR.j]
2008-07-16 lR Tomorrow, the bricks faces that surfaced today should be defined to see if they are in situ or brick fall. Since the area remains unclear, we will continue to use the small pick to eventually arrive to the same elevation as the eastern half of the locus. [Input: S716LR.j]
