Perceptual analysis

Amer Ahmad – August 2025

The perceptual character of the kitchen distinctly differs from that of the palace courtyard and other sectors within the service quarter. Although no fire installations remain today, the kitchen was once a vibrant sensory hub, where the heat radiating from hearths, combined with the bustle of daily activities, created a warm and dynamic atmosphere.

Panels illustrate some of these activities, providing visitors with a vivid sense of the work that took place in this space. The kitchen’s functions can also be easily related to present-day practices, particularly cooking over hearths and baking in the tannur—traditions that persisted until recently. The signs of repeated use on the walls testify to its continuous occupation, whether as a royal kitchen or a space of lesser importance.
