General notes on photos | 2001-09-03 | jlw | the entire west half of k13 (including what had been the east baulk of k3) was leveled and scraped to prepare for careful excavation of what we believed would be two kilns. This photograph documents the condition of the vertical and horizontal surfaces prior to excavation by jlw and the ceramic manufacturing specialist, yt. The photograph clearly shows the profile of the containment vessel of kiln a31 in the south baulk and evidence of ash streaming north from its air chamber on left side of the photograph. v157a thru v157c are increasingly tight shots of the containment chamber, f358, for kiln, a31. v157d shows the first evidence of the containment chamber, f357, for kiln, a30.
