2. IDENTIFICATION

Designation

Roster Date Author Record
Description (summary) 2008-07-28 lR Series of vertical bricks in the southeast corner of k14, running into the east section and visible in k15 as f40. To the north of the vertical bricks, there are also flat horizontal bricks that extend east into k15. At the moment we are keeping both these sets of bricks as f56 in k14 until the area is better defined. Presumably the bricks also run west under f34. [Input: S728LR.j]
2008-08-09 lR f40 with f56 are included under aggregate 2 (a2) forming a box like structure with multiple courses of vertical bricks, obliquely set, with thick mortar between the bricks. The first course was eroded and removed early in the season so it's difficult to reconstruct the original shape of this structure; it appears that the bricks were set in a manner that created a domed outer shape with a square base. The top bricks were cut back in section to understand how it was constructed with more bricks found below, vertically set and identical to the top course. On the western end, a wall constructed of thin vertical bricks obliquely set abuts a2, forming a wall oriented north to south, given the similarities in construction we are assuming that this wall is associated with a2. The western border also shows some of the bricks collapsed and these bricks were left articulated. It is unclear how deep this structure is, at the moment it appears to be three courses in construction utilizing bricks measuring 36 x 36 x 10 cm. [Input: S811LR6.j]

3. STRATIGRAPHY

Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2008-08-04 lR Articulated this feature today after the east baulk of k14 was removed. This appears to be several courses of vertical bricks forming a rectangular shape located between k14 and k15. The eastern portion was cut back to see if a section could be made, exposing the brick faces but only a few faces emerged. The sides were also defined. This is either a wall, using vertical bricks however since it doesn't continue in k14 or k15; it seems strange to be a wall. Another possibility is a grave with several cases at Mozan and other areas showing vertical bricks used in tomb construction. Lastly, this could also simply be a brick pile used for construction that was left in place after abandonment. [Input: S804LR.j]
Strategy (projected or implemented) 2008-07-28 lR remove f34 and see if bricks from f56 are present [Input: S728LR.j]
