Overview

Phase 7j is the earliest phase recovered thus far in J7. There are certainly lower levels but they were not excavated due to time constraints.

Stratigraphy

There are two main events that occur during Phase 7j - Ash accumulation and brickfall. These two layers seem to be part of a phase of destruction to the Southeast of J7 that sloped down and covered the J7, J2 and J6 areas. The phase is defined by a clear sloping layer of ash in the southern loci which is then covered by an extensive “dirty” brickfall.

Objects

Inside of the dirty brickfall numerous objects and ceramic fragments were recovered. The objects are typical for the site including lithics (both chipped and ground stone). This phase produced 57% of the objects recovered in J7, probably due to the volume of the brickfall and its origination out of occupied areas. Also within the brickfall layers are some preserved brick fragments.
