daily notes | 2000-7-03 | lr | We continued digging inside the structure beginning in the west towards the east. The material is a mixture of ash and a brown ac which flakes off easily. The workers completed two small pick runs, the first run about 6 cms down, and the next one about 10 cms down. The feature remained the same since there was no significant change in the soil content. Lots of sherds and bones were collected. A large fissure was found at the same line as the vault f303. A smooth surface is visible, this was photographed by okk v98. This line is rather puzzling for it suggests that something was leaning against this surface, so k27 leaned on k26, creating a smooth vertical surface. | [Input File: K703lr.j] |
2000-7-10 | jl | Today has brought some unusual surprises. We removed the pit f325 this morning and began digging the locus. We soon saw the outline of an area of slightly grayer earth in the SW corner, which intersects both the mud wall and the S baulk. The earth within it is slightly harder than the rest of the ^ac. Also, in the SE corner, there is evidence of a red layer, a black layer, and another red layer in a ring, the outer two of which are about 20cm wide. It is possible that these are vertical layers, cut almost horizontally by us. Finally, there are more strange vertical fissures in the N half of the locus, much small than the main one of f321. | [Input File: K710jl.j]
2000-7-11 | jl | We took a picture of the area of grayer, harder dirt in the SW (similar to the arrow f327) and then excavated down. The workmen have been finding an exceptional amount of pottery today: one 70cm slice filled up two pottery q-lots. | [Input File: K711jl.j]
2000-7-13 | jl | In our new pickrun this morning, three new features appeared. Around the circumference of the circle, there appears to be a separate layer of material, between 10 and 20cm thick, either red or yellow-brown in color. It is on the opposite side of the fissure f321 from the wall f326. Because we have the step of material next to the wall, it is impossible to tell whether it continues there. A thick ashy layer appeared along the N half of the square. Finally, a number of larger stones are beginning to be found in the ^a. | [Input File: K715jl.j] |
