Stratigraphy

Phase 9m contains the topsoil layer and the first accumulation under it. Stratum 20 (topsoil) is the topmost layer of permanent soil on the tell. It is distinguished by the fact that it contains roots and decayed plant matter. In this unit the topsoil, containing tufts of grass, was very thin because the steep downslope from east to west continued to foster erosion through the years. Stratum 30 (accumulations) consists of the most recent soil deposits directly under the topsoil. They are usually aolean and sometimes compacted by precipitation. Stones displaced by erosion and moved by water are often found in these layers.
