Description/Count
Description 2006-9-29mS in MZ18 this was described as the glacis at the base of the wall. We had also cut into this and collected pottery lots which mKB says are purely chalcolithic. In MZ19 we have decided to call this the escarpment to differentiate it from the glacis at the top of the wall found in J3. One of the goals of this season is to excavate to the south and follow this escarpment down to the plaza level. [Input file: Q926MS.J / Q926MS.-J]
2009-8-9lC The escarpment shows a sloping surface. Next to the base of the revetment wall it is constituted of pure clay to prevent the water seepage. Its surface is hard and kind of plastered, while inside the soil is softer and sandy, brown in color, with some medium to small sized stones. It incorporates also stones belonging to the earlier structures as the wall f288. [Input file: T808LC.J / T808LC.-J]

Recovery/Assignment and the Record
Daily 2009-8-10lC Today we continued to remove the material of the early escarpment. It is almost the same of yesterday, brown in color, compact but not hard with few mud brick chunks and some lenses of pure clay. Next to the stones of wall f288 there is a soil very brown and clayish. It could be just result of water infiltrations or could be a sort of packing between the junctures of the stones. The pottery seems clearly dating to Late Chalcolithic III, but further analysis are required. [Input file: T808LC.J / T808LC.-J]
2009-8-11lC Today we continued to remove it. We gave a new feature number ( f340) to keep separate the pottery coming from the surface of the early escarpment and from its core. The feature is the same of the previous day, brown in color and compact. We removed also a thin and not extended ash lens that was just on top of the hard surface f345. It could be the bottom of the escarpment or something related to Late Chalcolithic period. [Input file: T808LC.J / T808LC.-J]
Strategy 2009-7-22lC Today in the daily site meeting gB, fAB and J01 staff discussed about the strategy for the future excavation in the light of the last results. The main question regards f196, the early escarpment that seems to rise against the wall to the West. So next days we will start to enlarge to the West J01 excavation to expose the early escarpment. It could be helpful to understand the general situation of the bottom of the revetment wall and the plaza to the west. [Input file: T718LC.J / T718LC.-J]
Procedure 2009-8-10lC Today we decided to excavate this feature with the big pick starting from tomorrow. The soil is compact and just few sherds and almost not objects were recovered. Moreover we will sift the soil so we don't miss anything. [Input file: T808LC.J / T808LC.-J]

Phase to which stratum belongs 2011-2-10lC h3mJ1A [Input file: V211LC.J / V211LC.-J]
Stratigraphic reasons 2006-9-29mS We are assigning this to h1-J h1JPA, s r70 although the material may go back to the 4th millenium and the assignment may change. We have a very limited excavation area at this time with this material. The escarpment presumably was built the same time as the wall f72 which we are also assigning to this period. [Input file: Q926MS.J / Q926MS.-J]
2006-10-7mS lower escarpment of terrace wall f72. Currently assigned to phase 1. [Input file: QX06MS1.J / QX06MS1.-J]
Other reasons 2006-10-7mS based on future excavations, this date could be moved further back. [Input file: QX06MS1.J / QX06MS1.-J]
I99.NTime 2011-2-11lC Early escarpment abutting the base of the wall and built in the same period. The pottery is mixed between EDIII and LC, because, we assume they used dirt cut by the LC mound in order to build the EDIII Revetment Wall. [Input file: V212LC.J / V212LC.-J]
