Brief Overview
Bowls are open in form with a rim diameter wider than the height of the vessel. Access to the contents of the vessel is by pouring or scooping, depending on the size of the bowl. Bowls usually can be carried with two hands but the smaller bowls would be carries with only one hand.
In the LC3 period the most prevalent bowl shape is called hammer rim bowl. These popular bowls range in size from small to large with rim diameters ranging from 14 cm to 35 cm. Many fewer bowls are carinated in shape but they range in size from 15-35 cm. Even fewer are round sided, straight sided, and hemispheric bowls so it is impossible to estimate their size range as yet.
For an extensive list of bowls from all periods we have excavated see cross-bowls.
