Recovery/Assignment

Roster Date Author Record
Daily notes about recovery of elements 2004-06-23 jw began to retrieve a large quantity of large, goose-egg size objects with a triangular cross-section. Almost all were from the NE quadrant, which was designated f181. [Input: O624JW2.j]
2004-06-28 jw continuing to excavate matrix containing clay projectiles and evidence of their manufacture here. A few being found in all parts of the locus except the SE corner where there is a concentration of baked and unbaked reddish bricks, f187, surrounded by a soft, brownish accumulation, f191. [Input: O628JW5.j]
2004-07-01 jw momentarily stopped excavating in this locus, after reaching the bottom of the deposits containing the projectiles, f189 and f191. Photographed and removed as a sample a small mound of clay similar to that used in the projectiles that was found in the center of the putative fabrication/storage area. [Input: O701JW1.j]
2004-07-18 jw Resumed excavation in this locus after a hiatus of one week. [Input: O718JW2.j]
2004-07-19 jw Continued to excavate below the level where the oblong clay objects were found, and anticipating encountering some of the pise floors found in k14 and k4, about 60 cm below the current elevation. The fight occurred between two workmen from this square, so work slowed somewhat as a result. [Input: O719JW.j]
2004-07-20 jw Continued to excavate a layer of brownish accumulation containing one pit, a19, which is being dug separately. One clear seal impression was found within the accumulation. [Input: O720JW1.j]
2004-07-21 jw Continued to remove brown accumulation, f274, from the locus. Inspection of the section in the SW corner reveals that what we first believed to be a pit may well be an ashy layer. Inspection of the section in the NW corner reveals that we probably excavated through a thinly layered pise floor, f283, which is at virtually the same elevation as a similar floor, f213, in k4, diagonally to the NW. At the end of the day, we found a poorly made pebble and sherd floor along the eastern edge of the locus (it had been partially dug through in the NE corner). We will consider stopping here for the season. [Input: O723JW3.j]

Time Sequencing

Roster Date Author Record
Notes on time sequencing 2004-08-01 jw The north and east sections do not correlate with the soil features described during the excavation. A number of reasons could have contributed. During the excavation, there were four active loci and the time to supervise each by jw, the sole team member in the field for many days while gm was sick at home, was limited. In addition, the lead pickman and the only one highly skilled in the team had house responsibilities and was ill for part of the time. Third, the focus during the first portion of the excavation focused on the retrieval of a number of oblong clay objects, and some features were tied to this rather than to soil characteristics as observed in section. Evidence of two floors, f283 and f281, were encountered, and both can be seen in the north section. [Input: O801JW1.j]
