Under this was a N-S line of broken bricks, f312, along most of the east side, a stone and sherd surface, f310, in the south half, extending roughly diagonally from the SE corner, NW to the middle and accumlation, f311, primarily in the north half and far SW corner. at the beginning of the day, we cleaned thoroughly the floor, f322, and the wall, f323, in preparation for photographs. After the photograph, v151, we removed them. Beneath the floor, was accumulation, f325. After digging about 20 cm, we began to encounter much harder material, f328, along the northern edge, which abutted the much softer accumulation, f325, to the south. We originally thought that this may have been a wall. However on the last pick run, the features seemed to merge into material that more resembled f325. We found no traces of a wall. At the end of the day, ceased excavating this locus in favor of higher priority work in other loci in the final days of the season because we have no chance of reaching the floor level of the palace, which is over 1.5 meters below where we are now, with the available workforce. Anwar and Mizar, after the cleaning, started to remove the jars along the N baulk; i206 to 1208. It was possible to see that the soil within the jars was of the same colors of the accumulation that they sat in, but it was softer. Still going down in the trench, f423, but not as quickly as had hoped because Steff and Yestafat have found several items including i251, piece of cart, i254, si. mkb says at first glance the si is dated to the post-imperial Akkadian era. These all come from the same area inside the trench. We may want to open the trench horizontally in this area to get a fuller picture of what's going on. continued working slowly in the trench, f426 but with no new material found. We also finished removing the accumulation f444 s of the ashy material, f450 and red surface below f451. This accumulation had no special features but now that it is removed we are able to follow the ashy layer more cleanly. We will excavate this first thing on Saturday so it will be visible in the daily picture. It is seen in the e section of the trench but does not seem to run very far to the s. We outlined a pit in what is left of the baulk and cleaned this out. The cut of the pit is f460 and the fill is f459. This was seen clearly in the e section of k5, although it was not noticed during excavations in k5 in MZ14. gb states this may be part of the huge gray accumulation he was trying to find the boundary for. followed red surface, f451 by removing ashy layer, f450. In e section, adjacent to trench f426, it is very clear and easy to follow. It was here we found a cache of beads, i260. Several were frit, three of gold and one lapis lazuli. This may be the same elevation as the items found in f426 in a similar accumulation. Those were the cart piece, i251 and si, i254. In w portion it seemed as though the accumulation above the ashy layer was thicker and we might have lost the layer. We assigned this thicker layer of brown f464. fab also scraped a found a different color of accumulation at the s end of the square. Some of this change in color seems to correspond to f459 the sherd layer at the s end of f426. We did not stop at this change because the ashy layer followed under f464. At the end of the day and after cleaning it seems the ashy layer covers the entire square, but only patches of the floor, f451 exist. We will look more closely tomorrow. [Input: N802MS.j] |

declared f381 which appeared first as a dip in the middle of the locus after following f451 and removing f450. It now seems to be a pit instead. Removing fill, f381, but have not reached the end yet. Also declared f478 which is red bricky material in an L-shape in the w section of locus, into k5. This almost looks to be part of an andiron. To the west and contained by f478 is ashy fill, f479 contained by pit f480. We removed the fill and have reach a red bricky bottom. This may extend further east into the locus rather than be totally contained by f478. We will examine this further tomorrow. This feature was cut by the larger and later pit, f460. Also began removing the sherd layer, f454. This will be totally removed tomorrow. Also declared f482 which is a bricky mass in f426, the trench. jw thinks it may be part of an ew wall. We have named the rest of the feature fill f488 and have begun removing this. We will watch the pottery from here to see if Khabur sherds continue to appear. finished removing the fill f481 from pt f498, and the fill f459 from pt f460. The fill f481 was burnt ashy, red material. Under f491, the accumulation there is a red bricky material but no bricks seem to be there. It is very important that we understand what is happening as we go down in this area because of the association with the jar floor, a34, in k5. After meeting with gb, fab, jw and ms we decided to move in from the north and remove the entire section up to where the a34 installation begins in k5. This will give us a good section and we will have a better idea of what is happening and why the installation remained so intact. We began by removing a portion of f433 from the north. However, this appears to be part of a wall as there may be plaster on the south face. f433 is red bricky material and the north face was cut by the clay bin for the kilns, f155 which is why it was not seen before. Mizar contined to excavate the south face of f491. No bricks from the expected west face of f433 were encountered. However the section revealed a clear demarcation between accumulation f491 and a cleaner browner one below, designated f509. Ramadan continued to excavate the bulk of f491, moving from south to north in successive pick runs. Late in the day, he encountered a dense reddish accumulation, designated f509. It runs N-S and if it were the residue from a wall, it would be in an appropriate location to form the eastern boundary of a room containing the jars of a34 which have been exposed just to the west in k5. Mizar continued to excavate an exploratory trench along the northern edge, while Ramadan concentrated on excavating from the top down of accumulation f491, which covers the northern two-thirds of the locus. We did not see any evidence that the line of reddish accumulation extended past the limits observed at the end of yesterday. gg took an overhead photograph of this locus supplemented by features in k4, k5 and k14 to show the patches of red material scattered with gray accumulations. Work here proceeded at a slightly quicker pace today. Mizar finished excavating the fill from a very large pit. We attempted to determine whether the line of reddish material along the south baulk f508 was a wall top. Pick runs from the east and west revealed that it was most likely a brick wall. If so, it would probably form the eastern boundary of the space to the west in k5 that contains the large jars. Ramadan continued to remove the accumulation f509. fab postulated that the large stone basin i279 may have been the socket for the main gate. Both this and a slightly smaller hollowed out stone in k4 have inside diameters of 30cm, which would accommodate the large posts expected to be at either end of a formal entrance door. Ramadan and Muhammad Kher continued to clear the accumulation f509 found in most of the locus. Mizar tried with some success to find the north, east and west faces of wall f508. Ramadan and Muhammed Kher leveled and scraped the accumulation f509 throughout the entire locus, which contained relatively large quantities of sherds. In doing so they positively identified the east face of the N-S wall f508, which was cut by a succession of pits. Upon scraping after the last pick run, we noticed a N-S line of bright red plaster f527 which demarked the east face. The color of the plaster was similar to that which coated E-W wall f483 in k13. At the end of the day we finished excavating here for the MZ16 season, forgoing the opportunity to reach the associated floor this year. this locus was on a steep slope. We measured the elevation at several points, but recorded the highest one for the record (9024) as the starting point for excavating the topsoil, f306, in order to keep the features underneath in a logical sequence of elevations. However, some features in the lower western portion were discovered, measured, and recorded before the east part of the topsoil, f306, was fully excavated. As a result there is a greater variation in elevations of early features than would otherwise be expected. After the locus was leveled, all elevations fit the order in which they were discovered.
