in k14 we dug down of 20-40 cm to remove all the soft soil until we reached the hard ac which is the same of k13 and k3, the bed of the wadi. The wadi bed seems oriented from ESE to WNW. gb thinks that the wadi path was formed following the line of the palace wall, and the below the ac in k3 there may be the continuation of the palace wall. two rectangular pits were dug into the accumulation in k14. It was once thought that they were verigation chambers to mix clay for the Phase 5 pit kilns nearby, which are approximately at the same elevation. The ceramic manufacturing specialist, yt believed that they may have been places where ash from the kiln operations was dumped. The alkaline from the ashes would combine with fine loess particles to form a hard, dense, fine-grained accumulation. To test this hypothesis, we carefully scraped the top of the SW corner of k14 to determine how far to the east this material, seen in the east face of the east baulk of k4, extends. Careful cleaning revealed that althgh the block is about 2m high it is less than 50cm in width. To the north is a much softer, redder accumulation. The block of material resembles the pise cement used in foundations for Phase 5 architecture in A9. It now is likely that this combination of features is the NW corner of a room enclosed with pise walls. The walls have been assigned feature numbers f [Input: L827jlw1.j] |

we began removing f372 which is a homogeneous fill with few inclusions. f376 are large stones which serve as a natural division with the s portion of f373 from k13. [Input: N712MS.j] |

finished removing f 372 and f392. Still trying to find connections between f384 pebble/stone fl, and sherds to n. Bitumen painted sherd in f384 indicates a probably ph4, and Khabur sherds under f392 are younger. This may be coincidental. The sherd layer continues under f 392 which is the soil between f373 and pebbles of f384. We have named the sherd layer f 399.There is a cut line corresponding to the clay bin of MZ14, f155. Also just to the n of f376, large stones, there seems to be a difference in compaction and color of f373. We have called this f395. jw says it may indicate the beginnings of a kiln. removed sherds from f384, sherd/pebble layer. It seemed as though the floor continued more to the n but it was only a single line of sherds that continued. We did find one Khabur sherd in this area but it ismore to the east and in a less compacted area than the bitument painted sherd. Also removed sherds from sherd layer f399. Uncovered bu f408 just north of the pedestal we have left for the large stones, f376. It is unusual because it does not appear to be a burial placement but instead is just a skeleton dumped in the middle of the kiln waste. There is no cut and apparently no burial goods. Meesa is excavating the skeleton and it will probably be ready for photos and removal tomorrow. Bones are i236, hb. [Input: N720MS.j] |

finished removing f384 stone/sherd floor. Ahmad followed floor or sherds too deeply and dug a small hole inadvertantly. Named f414 to be the accumulation under this floor and to differentiate the sherd lots. Removed rest of f414 up to the edge of a f372. Also removed sherds from rest of f399 sherd floor. Continued cleaning hb f408. There are move bones to nw, possibley from same skeleton but may be another. These bones are also in a jumble. [Input: N721MS.j] |

started going down again in f372 towards east baulk. Fill remains consistant. Also removing f399 accumulation. Sherds have been removed. Will examine tomorrow to se if the accumulation is similar to f372 or is this still aprt of the clay bin, f155. flp drew skeleton and it was removed. Khabur sherd was lodged next to one of the bones. removed more of f372. When the rest of the baulk is removed tomorrow we should be able to delineate the connection between f407 and f372. We can also begin to examine the gray accumulation and attempt to define it's boundaries. [Input: N723MS.j] |

this area, f372 is at a higher elevation than k13 and we need to bring it down to be more even throughout. We may begin to work from the clay bin, f155 to the east towards the stones to see how much further the bin continues. We should see the connection between k15 and k14 on Saturday. We also removed the lining from the south kiln which is partially in k13. The kiln lining is f421. [Input: N725MS.j] |

still working in f399. This is still contained on the n by a cut with f373 which has become f420. In section it is still possible to see the sherds of the beginning of this f399. Above it the accumulation was more like f372 to the s, below the sherd level, it is more like the accumulation to the north, but the cut still seems to exist. Came down on sherds seen in section in of bin, f155. It is a small layering of sherds but does not appear to be a floor. We have named this pc f430. Took photos v196. [Input: N726MS.j] |

kept going down in f430. This is still kiln accumulation but there appeared some pockets of brown clay like material in s portion. It was thought the clay bin, f155, of MZ14 extended into this area. This is the only possible evidence we have of this so far. Decided to remove what was thought to be the bin lining running ew on s side of f155, bin and have uncovered red, bricky clay. This is f433. We will remove another few cm of this material and scrape and clean it well to see if it is brick or clay or fill. There seems to be a footing at the bottom of the level. Again, it may be part of the bin or something else and we will look more closely tomorrow. [Input: N727MS.j] |

cleaned and scraped well f433 the red bricky material to the south of the bin. This may or may not be a phase 3 wall cut by the kiln bin or associated material. Or it may still be part of the bin. Kiln waste is still seen in section of f430 along with a small portion of f433. We started cleaning out the kiln waste in f430 to delineate the brown material as much as possible. We also name f438 as the accumultion under the clay bin, f155. Still trying to understand how the kilns and associated material cut and connect with the ph3 material. [Input: N728MS.j] |

continued removing f430 and it still seems to be the last remnants of kiln accumulation. The red bricky areas of f433 do not seem to extend any further than already seen in section. Continued removing what's left of f420 in the rest of the locus to come down to f442 all over. [Input: N729MS.j] |

no digging but uncovered f457 under f438 while cleaning after baulk removal. Per jw at first glance it appears to be a brick floor but we will examine further tomorrow. [Input: N730ms.j] |

finished removing f438 accumulation to come down onto bricky accumulation, possible wall, f457. This area is very important because it may show how the possible cut of the kiln waste pit into phase 2 walls. The red bricky area of f457 seems so contain, to the south, the kiln material. So we have phase 5 cutting into phase 2 walls, if it follows through this way. Again, it is very important that we go down slowly n of this cut to find as much information as possible. jw had a corner cut out of sw corner of f422 to see if anything was visible. Nothing is seen. continued removing f442 moving north looking for possible face of f462, bricks in k13. Nothing outstanding was seen. There does not seem to be anything but brown accumulation in this area so we will start using the big pick to bring it down to the level of f457 which is the bricky area, possible wall. went down in f486 brown accumulation to n of wall f486. There seems to be another course appearing under this accumulation. This is along the NS course of the wall which had been a single row previously. The face of the EW section is clearer here as well. Also removed more accumulation w of f486. f499 is a small trench that was created inadvertantly and runs along this part of the wall. Will examine further to see if the face continues here. continued removing f486 to the south and east of w f483. This is thought to be inside room fill. We are saying that f486 is bounded by f483 on the north and west, and by f457 on the south. That is how we are digging the accumulation. We will attempt to find face of f457 if it is a wall rather than a floor. [Input: N810MS.j] |

Stef continued to excavate a block of accumulation f486, possibly the contents of a room contained by wall f485 to the north and west and wall f457 to the south. Pottery is being analyzed to determine the phase. A thin red coating on the south face of brick wall f485 is well preserved and can clearly be seen from wall top to the depth of excavation of f486. Two conical cups, i267 and i268 as well as a complete grindstone i269, were found in this accumulation today. [Input: N811jw.j] |

Muhammad Kher is now excavating f486, which continues to yield an unusually rich group of artifacts. jw noticed conical cup sherds and as well as other pieces of delicately made pottery typical of Phase 2. Item 274 was a large piece of bronze. There were several patches of white material characteristic of decayed vegetation. One curiosity was a line of three small circular brownish deposits which look like post holes. [Input: N813jw.j] |

Muhammad Kher continued to excavate accumulation f486. The pace was quite slow and there were relatively few artifacts recovered. There are large objects still imbedded in the accumulation and the red plaster face on wall f is still clearly visible. [Input: N815jw2.j] |

Muhammad Kher, Masum and Abd el-Karim continued to remove accumulation f486 which we presume overlays one of the palace floors. This presumption was strengthened today when we found fragments from a small, delicate stone cup (i280) and two other large ceramic cups with thinner walls than we have encountered here to date. The strategy of putting three excellent pickmen here paid dividends due to the symbiotic effect of cooperative effort. [Input: N816jw2.j] |

at the beginning of the day we closed f486, accumulation, and opened f518, the accumulation just below. We did so because it began to contain more whole, relatively delicate simple ware vessels. Muhammad Hair noticed evidence of a line of bricks along the southern edge, which had been cut by Phase 5 pits. This is probably the north face of E-W wall f457, which until now we have been unable to find with certainty. Yestafad began to seek the west face of N-S wall f520 by excavating the accumulation f519 immediately to the west of where we believed it would be. Although the wall appears to have been cut by another one of the large pits, we did find a layer of stones and sherds typical of the transition point between the lower stone and upper brick parts of Phase 2 walls. Further excavations in k3 tomorrow will help clarify the situation. [Input: N817jw.j] |

found the east face of f483 and foundation of sherds and stones. Gave new feature number, f518 to accumulation below f486. Started to remove accumulation f519 to the west of f483 N-S wall. Attempting to find west face wall f520, either bricks or stones/sherds. [Input: N817jw.j] |

Muhammad Hair and Sa'ud continued to remove accumulation f518 from the space bounded by walls on the north, south and west sides. Today the accumlation became noticeably harder and filled with more ashy deposits. It is difficult to predict when the associated floor will be reached. At the end of the day, a line of flat stones f526, about 110 cm long, was uncovered just inside the east face of N-S wall f520. [Input: N818jw.j] |

Saud, Muhammad Kher, and Stef finished excavating the room a36, having reached a floor, f534. The floor is made up of several elements, including a granular white clay over most of the area, with stones, sherds and baked brick along the western and southern edges. [Input: N819jw.j] |

Muhammad Kher began to excavate accumulation f539 from west to east, looking to see if the wall corner f544 was deeply founded. [Input: N820jw.j] |
