in k14 we dug down of 20-40 cm to remove all the soft soil until we reached the hard ac which is the same of k13 and k3, the bed of the wadi. The wadi bed seems oriented from ESE to WNW. gb thinks that the wadi path was formed following the line of the palace wall, and the below the ac in k3 there may be the continuation of the palace wall. two rectangular pits were dug into the accumulation in k14. It was once thought that they were verigation chambers to mix clay for the Phase 5 pit kilns nearby, which are approximately at the same elevation. The ceramic manufacturing specialist, yt believed that they may have been places where ash from the kiln operations was dumped. The alkaline from the ashes would combine with fine loess particles to form a hard, dense, fine-grained accumulation. To test this hypothesis, we carefully scraped the top of the SW corner of k14 to determine how far to the east this material, seen in the east face of the east baulk of k4, extends. Careful cleaning revealed that althgh the block is about 2m high it is less than 50cm in width. To the north is a much softer, redder accumulation. The block of material resembles the pise cement used in foundations for Phase 5 architecture in A9. Bitumen painted sherd in f384 indicates a probably ph4, and Khabur sherds under f392 are younger. This may be coincidental. The sherd layer continues under f 392 which is the soil between f373 and pebbles of f384. We have named the sherd layer f 399.There is a cut line corresponding to the clay bin of MZ14, f155. Also just to the n of f376, large stones, there seems to be a difference in compaction and color of f373. We have called this f395. jw says it may indicate the beginnings of a kiln. We did find one Khabur sherd in this area but it ismore to the east and in a less compacted area than the bitument painted sherd. Also removed sherds from sherd layer f399. Uncovered bu f408 just north of the pedestal we have left for the large stones, f376. It is unusual because it does not appear to be a burial placement but instead is just a skeleton dumped in the middle of the kiln waste. There is no cut and apparently no burial goods. kept going down in f430. This is still kiln accumulation but there appeared some pockets of brown clay like material in s portion. It was thought the clay bin, f155, of MZ14 extended into this area. This is the only possible evidence we have of this so far. Decided to remove what was thought to be the bin lining running ew on s side of f155, bin and have uncovered red, bricky clay. This is f433. We will remove another few cm of this material and scrape and clean it well to see if it is brick or clay or fill. There seems to be a footing at the bottom of the level. Stef continued to excavate a block of accumulation f486, possibly the contents of a room contained by wall f485 to the north and west and wall f457 to the south. Pottery is being analyzed to determine the phase. A thin red coating on the south face of brick wall f485 is well preserved and can clearly be seen from wall top to the depth of excavation of f486. Muhammad Kher is now excavating f486, which continues to yield an unusually rich group of artifacts. jw noticed conical cup sherds and as well as other pieces of delicately made pottery typical of Phase 2. Item 274 was a large piece of bronze. There were several patches of white material characteristic of decayed vegetation. Muhammad Kher, Masum and Abd el-Karim continued to remove accumulation f486 which we presume overlays one of the palace floors. This presumption was strengthened today when we found fragments from a small, delicate stone cup (i280) and two other large ceramic cups with thinner walls than we have encountered here to date. at the beginning of the day we closed f486, accumulation, and opened f518, the accumulation just below. We did so because it began to contain more whole, relatively delicate simple ware vessels. Muhammad Hair noticed evidence of a line of bricks along the southern edge, which had been cut by Phase 5 pits. This is probably the north face of E-W wall f457, which until now we have been unable to find with certainty. Yestafad began to seek the west face of N-S wall f520 by excavating the accumulation f519 immediately to the west of where we believed it would be. Although the wall appears to have been cut by another one of the large pits, we did find a layer of stones and sherds typical of the transition point between the lower stone and upper brick parts of Phase 2 walls.
