Bowls

Brief Overview

The definition of what is a bowl is the same for all units and all time periods in the UGR. See here for further details. The most important context so far in Urkesh for the Akkadian period is the royal palace of Tupkish with its two courtyards and various rooms investigated by us, see BM 30.

Round sided bowls are common in this time period. Occurring in this shape many of them are made in Bi-colored ware. They have a red-orange exterior and a gray-brown area around the exterior of the rim only. The surface is smooth and sometimes appears to have been polished.

It is thought that these bowls could be imported from the Upper-Tigris region although imitations of vessels in this ware were also made in Urkesh.

Deep bowls can have an incised decoration which is below the rim and occurs in parallel horizontal lines and an undulating line pattern. Some bowls can have an applied decoration also placed near the rim.
