Introduction
Incised template lines existed in the late ED III period (Phase 3) and continued into the Ur III period (Phase 5) when incised decoration was fairly common on medium jars and bowls. Incised patterns are made with a comb; designs are placed below rim, can have incised horizontal lines or wavy lines or a combination of both; can be combined with rope decoration. Often the wavy combed bands are bordered on the top and bottom with bands of horizontal incised lines.
Besides various incised line patterns, vessels are occasionally incised with shapes such as animals or with potter’s marks
