A Grammar of the Archaeological Record (Version 2, Beta release)

Structuring wholes. Typology. Semiotics

The concept

Giorgio Buccellati – April 2026

Semiotics is the portion of typology that deals with excavated elements in terms of their meaning, on the basis of such factors as ancient textual references (semantics), of distributional classes that signify functional classes (syntax), external clues about use and purpose (pragmatics)

It reflects a third level of referentiality in the grammaticalization of the elements.
