Back to top: 3. Folders and Files
3.1: Input folders
The parent folder for everything being produced is \MZ\A (for Mozan\Archive).
Under it, there is a folder labeled after each unit (e.g., \MZ\A\A01 or \MZ\A\V19).
All input data for the stratigraphic units are within a folder labeled I (for Input).
The primary folder is I\J (for Input\Journal). This is the only folder accessed by the JD program suite, which produces the browser edition.
The I\R folder (for Input\Relays) contains the files that include the data input for relays. These files are processed by the RD program (see 22.3 and 22.11, for R and D programs, respectively), which produces a pertinent J file within the I\J folder, and also goes through all other intermediate steps all the way up to the browser edition.
The I\E folder (for Input\Entry Point) contains files that represent an intermediate output ready for further processing. This output has been automatically checked for format errors, and is ready for further processing. This is a blind output, in the sense that users need not refer to it. Files in the folder may be deleted at any time.
Input data that come to a stratigraphic unit from outside sources (e.g., from the photographer or from a typological specialist) are placed in the folder I\EXOGEN (for exogenous). It is the responsibility of unit directors to check these files and place them in the I\J folder for processing.

3.2: Input files
The details of input file format and structure are given below in chapters 4, 5, and 6.

3.3: Definition files
Definition files are entered manually in folder \MZ\DEPOT and provide data for programs to function automatically.

3.3.1: -BOOK.DEF
The file -BOOK.DEF is used by all programs. Only one book can serve as default on any given drive. It is placed in the \MZ\DEPOT folder.

3.3.2: V-FILES.TXT and W-FILES.TXT
The files V-FILES.TXT and W-FILES.TXT are placed in the TEXTS\DF-FILES folder. Both are used by the JD5-B program.
Both files must be updated as new folders become available with either photos or drawings.
If no photos or drawings are available (thus regularly at the beginning of the season), the files V-FILES.TXT and/or W-FILES.TXT must still be placed as blank files in the TEXTS\DF-FILES. Otherwise, the program will stop and remind the user that the files are needed.

3.4: Blind index files
Some files are generated by programs to be used by other programs. They entail no data entry procedures – in this sense they are considered “blind.” They are described here for the programmer’s use, and to explain why these files appear in the record. They are all placed in the \MZ\DEPOT folder.

3.4.1: File placed by JD1-J program in root folder
The file J-TEMP.TXT lists the book, the .E file label, the path and file label for the summary file, and the starting time. It is used by all subsequent programs in the suite. Each new file erases the previous one.
