General Description of the Group

Clays are both buff and reddish paste. The reddish paste is due to the large amount of iron in the clay. The buff clays fire to a creamy white color while the red clays fire to an orange red. All have some chaff temper but CH and FC have a greater amount than RC. RC vessels are also characterized by a large amount of calcareous inclusions which are usually evenly distributed throughout the vessel. All vessels in this Group are medium fired and none have a firing cloud. The exterior treatment is wet smoothed but the R ware vessels are much coarser on the exterior than the others. CH vessels have more small to medium holes on the exterior surface due to the burnt chaff temper.
