Daily notes about recovery of elements 2006-08-26 sC Today we start and finished to remove the E baulk (f52, q101, q105). [Input: Q826SC.j]
2006-08-30 sC Today we finished to remove f71 (q149) in the NW area of k83 (120cm N to r35). In the NE area of the square f71 is cut by f65. Therefore we decided to remove the small portion of f65 still in place in the E baulk of k83 as well as in k73 (f65 has been assigned to the German trench in the E baulk of the square). The portion of baulk that is interested by the cut of German trench is 140cm S and 100cm W to m4394. Once the workmen finished to remove f65, I move them to k82, in order to investigate whether f71 (i.e. a compact surface characterized by the presence of pottery sherds, fragments of tannur, small stones and few pebbles) continue in this square or not (in k82 we exposed not only the same accumulation as f71, but also the glacis and the baqaya). [Input: Q830SC.j]
2006-08-31 sC Today we continued digging f78 (q167, q171) in the S area of the square (2,80m N to m4409), and stop digging f78 at the elevation of m4377 +6 –118. Several stones (f146, f141) have been exposed, and between them, a very compact surface have been found. jO and gB come to our unit: jO suggests that these stones, which seem to be alligned with the Apron in J2, could belong the Apron; gB, on the other side, observed that by looking at these stones it looks more like that we do not have the Apron here; these stones seem to belong to a wall running N-S (which is parallel to the wall on the E of the monumental staircase), and they could belong to another phase of the same wall or to a structure connected with it. If this is the case, it does not fit with the idea proposed by pP, i.e. which interpreted the wall E to the monumental staircase as a wall trapezoidal in shape which could have been located the “middle” of a specular apron. Therefore, the area E to the monumental staircase (where k82, k83 and also k73 are located) would have had a completely different function/use. [Input: Q831sC.j]
2006-09-02 sC Today we stared and finished to remove the E baulk in k83 (f52, q190). Once we reached the bottom of the E baulk, we noticed some ash spots (which are spread in the western portion of k73 as well). I suppose we reached the ashy layer noticed two weeks ago during the scraping of the section of the E baulk. [Input: Q902sC2.j]
2006-09-09 sC We start by removing few cm close to the S baulk of k83, where on thuesday, a plastic fragment was noticed in a little area which was 5cm higher in elevation respect the square (50cm N and 40cm W to the NE corner of N baulk). Once we reached the same elevation of the square, we start digging f78 (q237) in front of the line of large stones exposed in the square last week (i.e 100m N and 400m W to the NE corner of N baulk). f78 is as noticed before, characterized by very compact layer, light grey in colour, soft once removed. By digging in this small portion of the square, we started exposing three different surface, approximately every 5cm, all flat and characterized by a compact surface, that once removed it is soft in consistence. These surfaces are characterized by the presence of pottery sherds and little pebbles (<4cm in diameter). At the elevation of m4408 +116 -138 in the S area of the square, close to the S baulk, we noticed a change in the surface: a small area characterized by a very fine texture and which is dark brown in colour. This is the same of f79 in k84. Two stones have been partially exposed, one close to the S baulk of the square. Tomorrow we will continue to dig in k83. We want to investigate whether other stones are located here. [Input: Q909SC.j]
2006-09-10 sC Today we continued digging in the S portion of k83 (i.e. 70m N and 360m E to m4409). Yesterday, at the end of the day we expose a very compact surface, fine in texture and dark brown in colour. Today we assigned a new feature number to this accumulation, f119, and start digging it (q246). Few pottery sherds have been collected, and, among these, some Habur sherds. f119 is the same of f118 in the N area of k84. At the bottom elevation of q246 a ash layer has been noticed in the NW corner of the excavated square. [Input: Q910SC.j]
Lack of expected information 2010-03-18 sC Unlucky there are no photos showing k83 before we start digging in this locus in the 2006 excavation season. J2t61 shows the mentioned square at the end of the 2004 excavation season, showing the different elevations that characterize this locus. [Input: U315SC.j]
