Daily notes about recovery of elements 2001-07-25 jlw cleared the overburden from the locus, consisting mainly of backdirt that had been temporarily placed along the edge of the active excavation. After breakfast began excavating a thin layer of topsoil, f300, and the underlying gully wash, f301, which could be seen in section in the already excavated north side of the north baulk. Approximately 25cm under the surface, found a relatively crude pebble and sherd surface, f302, in the SW corner, under which was another accumulation, f305. Began to encounter a more dense accumulation, f303, under f301, in the eastern half of the locus. [Input: L811jlw.j]
2001-07-25 vp the biggest part of workers spent all the day to remove the ground on the south of the new locus, k5. vp and Adib took the corners relais of the area to be excavated of k5. Then Tariq, Ali and Suliman, with big picks, started to remove the top soil, not very hard, c#10YR7/3 co pale brown, f300. Under of it, it was possible to see the granular accumulation f301, producted by the rain and the wind, c#10YR5/3 co brown. They removed it with big picks and cleaned all the locus. During the cleaning it was possible to see some pebbles and sherds f302, on the SW corner and about on the middle of the locus, and a hard a f303 on the south half of k5. In the N half the f301 continued for about 15cm down. Tariq with the trowel tried to explorer the f303 and found, about in the middle of the E section a big door socket and 1m to W an other one smaller. Then, they removed the f302, f303 and cleaned the entire locus. [Input: L725vp1.j]
2001-07-26 vp Tariq Ali and Suliman started to clean the entire locus, k5. All the team started to remove the ts f306 in k15. Then Tariq removed the natural accumulation, left on the NE quarter of k5, f301: under of it, it was possible to see the same hard, white accumulation as the SE quadrant of locus, f303. Vp decided to remove the f303, in the E half of locus, at the first the NE quadrant, then the SE quadrant, trying to understand the situation. A different accumulation f304 and two broken tannurs, on the middle of the W half of k5, appeared under of it: f304 was softer, granular, about yellow and mixed with small pieces of carbon and white grits. That accumulation was visible on the entire area, except on the SW quadrant of locus. There, it was possible to see a very soft and darker ground with a consistent number of roots, f305. After a cleaning, Tariq Ali and Suliman cut the sections E and S where the f303 appeared very clear. Then they removed all the f304. [Input: L726vp.j]
2001-07-29 jlw continued to excavate the entire locus, concentrating on some emerging brickwork, f319 and f320, and a possible pit, f321, in the SW corner. [Input: L812jlw2.j]
2001-07-30 vp Tariq and Ali cleaned very well all the locus to see if the bricks traces near the N baulk were really so. In effect, they found a bricks line f324, direction E-W. vp documented well the wall and decided to remove it to dig the entire half of locus. Then they continued to dig the f326 for about 1m: that accumulation was very hard,c# 10YR7/2 with pieces of carbon and with grits, maybe same as f304. vp thought that is the same accumulation as seen in the south baulk of k4. [Input: L730vp1.j]
2001-07-31 vp Tariq and Ali started to clean the entire locus. Ali, during the cleaning, came on evidence on the NE corner, a surface of pebbles and sherds, pc, f329, present until the middle of the area. We took the elevation and then we removed it with small picks. Then, Tariq and Ali started to dig accumulation, f330, for about 15cm: it was possible to see, below, a different accumulation f332 and a tannur, f333, half of which was in the W baulk. On the top of f332 there were some traces of ash, about 2cm. Then, Tariq removed the bricks near the N baulk, f324, and, after the cleaning, it was very evident, a floor, f336, connected with them, granular but compacted (c#:7.5YR5/6, co:strong brown). vp took the elevation of f336 and decided to draw parallels between it and the floor, f337, below the bricks on the middle of the locus, on the S-E of the tannur, f333; The elevations, and the colors (c#:10YR7/4, co:pale brown), of both floors (f336 and f337) were identical. [Input: L823vp1.j]
2001-08-01 jlw removed about 60 cm of accumulation, f332, from the north half. After breakfast, began to remove the N baulk. We followed the stratigraphy already established for the locus to assign feature numbers to q-lots. In the afternoon excavations, found a cache of bones that turned out to be those of an animal. [Input: L813jlw.j]
2001-08-02 jlw removed accumulations, f340 and f341, from the north side of the locus, now including what had been the north baulk. On the last pick run, found a N-S mudbrick wall, f342 in the NE quadrant. On either side, after removal of accumulations west, f341, and east, f343, of wall, f342, found a stone paved surface, f344, which is clearly an extension of the top of the stone platform located just to the north. [Input: L813jlw1.j]
2001-08-28 jlw removed accumulation, f340, in a two square meter area above the level of mudbrick wall, f342. Removed about one square meter of accumulation, f343, from atop the stone and sherd pavement, f345, east of wall, f342. [Input: L828jlw1.j]
2001-08-29 jlw continued to clean the locus in preparation for final photographs and for cover/backfill until excavation resumes next season. Leveled accumulation, f340 and cut straight E-W baulks. [Input: L829jlw2.j]
2001-09-03 jlw finished trimming the excavated area for final photographs and for cover and backfill in preparation for the next excavation season. [Input: L903jlw.j]
2003-07-17 ms continued removing pt fill f391 to define outlines of pit itself, f394. This may shed some light on what is going on with brick. To the sw of the pit are two bricks laid vertically. It is not clear whether they were laid that way or fell. There are also bricks in the e section of the pit. These seem to align with the bricks seen in s section. Also going down in a f390 to the east of the pit. This also seems to have a line of bricks running ew. Relationship among all these lines of bricks is very unclear at the moment. [Input: N717MS.j]
2003-07-19 ms there is brick everywhere and we are unclear of the connection with f399. Bricks in section in pt f394 are very different from the wall. They are thin and alternating gray and brown in layers. These are f403. There may also be bricks in the bottom of the pit. We removed a layer of bricks from wall f387 just to get a view of what is going on. The brick continues under. After conferring with gb we began to remove f404 to n of f387 to get a sense where the bricks might end. This accumulation might be equated with f340 in MZ14. [Input: N719MS.j]
2003-07-20 ms continued removing a f397 to n of pit f394. Uncovered large stone, f410, perhaps in line or at same level as stones and sherd pavement from MZ14, f208. Also uncovered possible burial, f403, but it was only an animal. Took photo and removed it. Continue talking f397 to s and down. Will start going down at lower levels. gb believes these are part of large gray accumulation. We will assign new feature number although it is well seen in the baulk. This will be f411. [Input: N720MS.j]
2003-07-21 ms began going down in f411 which is an accumulation, possibly same gray compacted material seen in baulk and covering lots of area in MZ14. After removal though, it seems to be a different material as it is brown rather than gray. Rashid uncovered the bottom of a large jar in situ. It seems to be complete and it is i237. f411 runs ns along e baulk and is bounded by possible wall, f413. This wall may go all the way up to s section under wall f387 but that is not clear. N portion of f413 runs s and is a continuation of a wall uncovered in MZ14. It goes up to the large sherd pavement, f208. Currently unclear of the connection but we will examine the old files to see what has already been written about this. If there is a connection than f411 is possible ph 3. We seemed to have missed the floor of pit f394 and continued down. f397 is now a uniform level w of f413. We have bricks running we and cut by the pit. The vertical brick at the top of f394 seems to have a footing. Per jo there may be a threshhold or doorway. In section thre is a cut with similar accumulation on either side. Tomorrow we will photograph, draw and consult with gb on next steps. [Input: N721MS.j]
2003-07-22 ms continued removing accumulation f411 around i237, large ja and two more jars on their sides have been uncovered. Rasheed is excavating slowly. At first we thought this might be a burial, but these may just be an installation of large vessels on a floor. Will continue to examine. Started removing accumulation, f418 w of wall f413. This wall may be the w border of the huge gray accumulation because layers are seen in the w baulk w of the wall, but nothing is seen in the e baulk. Took photos of pit f394 and possible threshhold. [Input: N722MS.j]
2003-07-23 ms continued removing dirt around jars in f411 looking for floor or some surface. Still no sign of pit so it is probable that this is an installation. We are uncovering more jars, sherds, stones, and more items. i244, i245, i246 are three more jars in situ. We have also found a metal pin, i247. Majid and Rashid are picking here. The dirt is soft and brown an appears in section under gray accumulation. Remains contained by f413, wall. Also continued going down in accumulation f418. It is unclear what is going on here. There seems to be red bricky material but no real articulated bricks. We find the w face of f413. There seems to be a layer or small pit of ashy material in w portion running into baulk. We are moving slowly here to insure we understand what's going on. [Input: N723MS.j]
2003-07-24 ms continue excavating f411 and exposing more jars, large and small. Still no floor seen although we may only be 10 cm above possible floor. At very end of the day we started coming upon charcoal and possible burnt wood. Will look further on Saturday. Unclear about purpose of room. SB suggests it may be a storage room. One of the jars, i237, is like a jar found in F1 and dated to Old Akkadian. This would give this area a ph3 date. Any floor would be below the sherd/stone floor, f208 of MZ14. We have named this area aggregate 34. To west of wall f413, in accumulation f397, we are still unclear what is going on. We may have a differentiation between the area that is adjacent to wall f413 and the half that abuts the baulk. We have given these two new feature numbers and will excavate seperately until differentiation is clearer. f422 is west of the wall f413 and is a grayer material with sherds. West of this is f423. There are more inclusions and may have been the remnants of a pit or fill. [Input: N725MS.j]
2003-07-26 ms still working in a34, f411. still finding more, but smaller jars. We have a complete baked brick lying horizontally at the n end of the aggregate. It is near several small jars lying on their sides. This may indicate we have the floor. There are other bricks nearby, but broken and on their sides. We also have the imprint of what appears to be a piece of matting. It does not seem to be a basket. It is a spiral design and about ----- cm across. We may refer to this as a negative item, n1. Will consult with gb. After much consultation we feel it may be a woven mat used traditionally for putting under hot things. Should cease excavating in this area soon and protect the jars as much as possible. Took photos v195 Nasm was working w of wall f413. f422 seems to continue as an accumulation. f423 is more bricky. We removed the first layer and seem to have come down on more bricks, per jo. This is still a difficult area to interpret. f422 is very narrow and we have a new jar in situ there. It is between wall f413 and the bricks of f423. We will continue in f422 and look for a floor. [Input: N726MS.j]
2003-07-27 ms no excavation in a34. We believe we have found the floor with the horizontal brick and matting, i250. Removed f403 bricks in pit f394. . There also seems to be some fill, f391, left along s portion of pit so we are removing that to hopefully increase understanding of what is giong on and relationships among the walls in this area. Also removed tannur, f432, which equals f364 in MZ14. We want to clean up to the section of the baulk and come down. Under the tannur is accumulation f432. This was also removed down to the level of f423. New accumulation is f435 and just to the west of f423. We started removing this accumulation to see the other side of f423. jo sees bricks in f423 and jw suggests it may be pise wall. Again, it is difficult to see exactly what is going on. Removed stones, f431, that were sitting east of tannur. Finished removing the last small patch of f397 which is the accumulation we had throughout this k earlier. This was the last portion remaining. Will examine f423 again tomorrow to see if today's excavation has given us any additional information. [Input: N727MS.j]
2003-07-28 ms Came down in a f390 at sw corner of locus. This is to the w of pit f394 and has been cut both by this and plant roots. There may be bricks in some portion but it is very difficult to understand the connection with other parts of the locus. There seems to be a pit under f390 which is seen in section of the pit and we will remove f390 and define pit boundaries tomorrow. We also came down in a f435 to the w of pise f423. The differentiation is very clear between f435, f423 and also f422, but the overall connection with the rest of the area is unclear. We will backfill and cover a34 to protect it while we come down to same level in k15. mkb will look especially at pottery lots from f411 the dirt in this aggregate. [Input: N728MS.j]
2003-07-29 ms finished removing last remnants of f390 and removed part of a f443. Nothing special of note in this area. [Input: N729MS.j]
2003-07-30 ms removed n baulk; no additional digging in square. Took pictures, v197, of a34, jar installation in am. [Input: N730ms.j]
2003-07-31 ms we removed more dirt from f443. This location is still very unclear. We have some bricky material and some fill but no accumulation or direct connection with wall, f387 on the e side of the pit f394. We, jw and ms, have decided to keep removing the material under f443 and come down on the current accumuation, f435 and attempt to define the possible pise wall, f423. Will continue here on Saturday. [Input: N731MS.j]
2003-08-02 ms removed accumulation, f443 and came down on possible floor, f465, but it was very small and did not got anywhere. Perhaps it was cut by pit, f394. We removed f465 and began removing brown accumulation below, f466. [Input: N802MS.j]
2003-08-04 ms some of the features we are excavating in this locus are partially in k15 or related to features in k15. We will describe them under k15 since the majority of the activity here is currently originating in k15. These features include f460, f478, f479 and f480. [Input: N804MS.j]
2003-08-19 jw Mizar and Yestafad continued to carefully remove the jars, bowls and cups that comprise a34. At the end of the day they reached what may be a floor surface, as yet undesignated. A several baked bricks and other detrious were found interspersed with the ceramic vessels. Many small vessels were complete, although some were broken. [Input: N819jw.j]
2003-08-20 jw Mizar and Yestafad finished removing all of the vessels that comprise a34. In doing so, they reached a flat, relatively clean surface that could mark the stopping point for excavating here this season. As they followed this surface to the north, they reached an E-W line of stones f542, which appear to be either the foundation for a wall that has been destroyed or a threshold for a stairway that descends to the south. [Input: N820jw.j]
Strategy (projected or implemented) 2001-07-25 vp we will open the first locus, k5, on the south area of A15 to look for some links between both sides. Tariq Ali and Suliman will dig there. We will remove the ground on the SW slope of k5:the other workers will dig there. [Input: L725vp1.j]
2001-07-26 vp we will continue to dig in k5. Tariq Ali and Suliman will dig here. We will open the new locus on the E of k5, k15. [Input: L726vp.j]
2001-07-30 vp we will dig just the N half of k5, to looking for some traces of a building gate wall. We will to try arriving to the reddish traces of bricks, evident on the S section of K4. Tariq and Ali will dig there with big picks. [Input: L730vp1.j]
2001-07-31 vp we will continue to dig the N half of locus. [Input: L823vp1.j]
