Daily notes about recovery of elements 2001-07-26 jlw backfill cleared before breakfast. Afterward, began excavating topsoil, f306. [Input: L812jlw.j]
2001-07-28 jlw finished excavating topsoil, f306, immediately under which was gully wash accumulation, f307, which was removed. Under this was a N-S line of broken bricks, f312, along most of the east side, a stone and sherd surface, f310, in the south half, extending roughly diagonally from the SE corner, NW to the middle and accumlation, f311, primarily in the north half and far SW corner. After removing these, there was another line of bricks, f318, in the SE corner, which were possibly a lower course of f312, that had been overlaid by the stones, f310. [Input: L812jlw1.j]
2001-07-29 jlw continued to excavate accumulation, f311, primarily in the east part of the locus. Began to see evidence of a N-S line of bricks along the east baulk in the NE quadrant, f323, and an associated floor surface, f322, in the north half of the locus. [Input: L812jlw2.j]
2001-07-30 jlw at the beginning of the day, we cleaned thoroughly the floor, f322, and the wall, f323, in preparation for photographs. After the photograph, v151, we removed them. Beneath the floor, was accumulation, f325. After digging about 20 cm, we began to encounter much harder material, f328, along the northern edge, which abutted the much softer accumulation, f325, to the south. We originally thought that this may have been a wall. However on the last pick run, the features seemed to merge into material that more resembled f325. We found no traces of a wall. Due to confusion between a volunteer student and her supervisor, a separate pottery lot was not assigned to f328. [Input: L730jlw.j]
2001-07-31 jlw continued to dig accumulation, f328, which absorbed accumulation, f325, to the north. q664 was mis-labeled as coming from f325 when it actually came from f328. Encountered somewhat different material under f325/f328. Designated accumulation, f335. In it were 3 large jars along the north baulk, i206, i207, and i208, which were removed for possible restoration. At the end of the day, ceased excavating this locus in favor of higher priority work in other loci in the final days of the season because we have no chance of reaching the floor level of the palace, which is over 1.5 meters below where we are now, with the available workforce. [Input: L731jlw.j]
2001-07-31 vp Anwar and Mizar, after the cleaning, started to remove the jars along the N baulk; i206 to 1208. It was possible to see that the soil within the jars was of the same colors of the accumulation that they sat in, but it was softer. There were two strips of accumulation; the first was f325, the second f328. At the end of the day, Anwar removed them. [Input: L823vp1.j]
2003-07-19 ms cut back and scraped sections in baulks and along a f380 to get an idea of the relationship among all the walls of the aggregate, a33. Assigned addtional feature numbers to walls. jw noticed a course of half bricks as part of f379. He says this in indicative of two walls next to each other rather than a single wall. The half course and other two courses are to the w of f379 and are f405. The same seems to be true for f375. We have assigned f406 to the western course of bricks. f407 is the accumulation between the baulk area s to the section beneath a f380. Started going down in this area. [Input: N719MS.j]
2003-07-20 ms continued going down in f407, accumulation. Originally kept to lines of baulk but have decided to remove what's left of baulk to get continuation between k15 and k14. Uncovered small pebble layer in ne cornder of k. This is f409. Consists of small rounded, gray pebbles and goes into the baulk, which is another reason to remove baulk. This is not seen in section on the other side. f407 is dark brown and seemingly damp. This seems to be the same material in the baulk. [Input: N720MS.j]
2003-07-21 ms removed more of n baulk leaving a section for the point. We will remove this when we get more points. Stone/pebble lens, f409, continues into this baulk but barely extends half way. Seems to go into pedestal for a little bit as well. Gray area f412 is also in this baulk and in w baulk as well. It seems to be a pit, but we did not define the top. Ramadan is digging it out. There is a large stone which is sitting in the middle of the gray material but does not seem to have any connection with anything else at the moment. [Input: N721MS.j]
2003-07-22 ms continued cleaning gray area f412. Took photos of pebble lens f409. This can be removed. Took down f386, gully wash portion of baulk with k5. Possible continuation of wall f405. Will need to examine further. [Input: N722MS.j]
2003-07-23 ms went down evenly throughout f407. Large stone seems to be in th emiddle of pit f412 and probably fell in and does not appear related to other features so we can remove it tomorrow. Since we have new points we can remove the last of the baulk, see the extent of f409, pebble lens, and remove it. fab suggested removing walls. [Input: N723MS.j]
2003-07-24 ms took down the remaining piece of n baulk and also removed pebble lens f409. It did not extend into the baulk at all. We went down in f407, the accumulation throughout the locus. We cleaned and scraped well to get any type of differentiation. Pit f412 seems to continue but we may be at the end of it. There seems to be an additional gray lens to the south and there may be a different, browner accumulation in the e of the locus but total differentiation is unclear. Will look further on Saturday and determine whether new feature numbers are needed. [Input: N725MS.j]
2003-07-26 ms Ramadan finished cleaning out fi f424 in pit f425. We then began digging the trench ns along the e baulk. This is f426. [Input: N726MS.j]
2003-07-27 ms Still going down in the trench, f423, but not as quickly as had hoped because Steff and Yestafat have found several items including i251, piece of cart, i254, si. mkb says at first glance the si is dated to the post-imperial Akkadian era. These all come from the same area inside the trench. We may want to open the trench horizontally in this area to get a fuller picture of what's going on. There also seem to be differentiations in the levels but not enough to create a new feature. [Input: N727MS.j]
2003-07-28 ms continued trench f426 but also began digging in square. We named the upper level of accumulation f439. We will give each level we go do a different feature number until features become apparent. We removed the first 20cm of k15. [Input: N728MS.j]
2003-07-29 ms continued going down in trench, f426. Uncovered a layer of stones and sherds in s edge of trench. This is f454. To the w of the trench, we finished removing accumulation f439 without any noticeable differentiation and continued going down with new feature f444. This is also a homogeneous accumulation but we noticed the start of an ashy layer near the northern edge and adjacent to f433. The ashy layer is f450. We followed f450 to the south a have uncovered what may be a floor, f451. This was at the end of the work day so we will examine more closely tomorrow. [Input: N729MS.j]
2003-07-30 ms no digging because of baulk removal. [Input: N730ms.j]
2003-07-31 ms continued working slowly in the trench, f426 but with no new material found. We also finished removing the accumulation f444 s of the ashy material, f450 and red surface below f451. This accumulation had no special features but now that it is removed we are able to follow the ashy layer more cleanly. We will excavate this first thing on Saturday so it will be visible in the daily picture. It is seen in the e section of the trench but does not seem to run very far to the s. We outlined a pit in what is left of the baulk and cleaned this out. The cut of the pit is f460 and the fill is f459. This was seen clearly in the e section of k5, although it was not noticed during excavations in k5 in MZ14. gb states this may be part of the huge gray accumulation he was trying to find the boundary for. We have cleaned most of it out but have been careful because it is adjacent to the jar installation, a34 in k5. [Input: N731MS.j]
2003-08-02 ms followed red surface, f451 by removing ashy layer, f450. In e section, adjacent to trench f426, it is very clear and easy to follow. It was here we found a cache of beads, i260. Several were frit, three of gold and one lapis lazuli. This may be the same elevation as the items found in f426 in a similar accumulation. Those were the cart piece, i251 and si, i254. In w portion it seemed as though the accumulation above the ashy layer was thicker and we might have lost the layer. We assigned this thicker layer of brown f464. fab also scraped a found a different color of accumulation at the s end of the square. Some of this change in color seems to correspond to f459 the sherd layer at the s end of f426. We did not stop at this change because the ashy layer followed under f464. At the end of the day and after cleaning it seems the ashy layer covers the entire square, but only patches of the floor, f451 exist. We will look more closely tomorrow. [Input: N802MS.j]
2003-08-03 ms continued removing f470 which is the gray area at the end s end of k13. This is the cut that fab noticed on N802. We found a sherd layer and this is a continuation of f459 which is the sherd layer we found in the trench. It extends well west into k13. We excavated this slowly; will photograph and remove in morning. Took v205 of this area. [Input: N803MS.j]
2003-08-04 ms declared f381 which appeared first as a dip in the middle of the locus after following f451 and removing f450. It now seems to be a pit instead. Removing fill, f381, but have not reached the end yet. Also declared f478 which is red bricky material in an L-shape in the w section of locus, into k5. This almost looks to be part of an andiron. To the west and contained by f478 is ashy fill, f479 contained by pit f480. We removed the fill and have reach a red bricky bottom. This may extend further east into the locus rather than be totally contained by f478. We will examine this further tomorrow. This feature was cut by the larger and later pit, f460. Also began removing the sherd layer, f454. This will be totally removed tomorrow. Also declared f482 which is a bricky mass in f426, the trench. jw thinks it may be part of an ew wall. There are stones associated with this so it may be the remains of a wall, or just brickfall. We will examine further tomorrow. [Input: N804MS.j]
2003-08-05 ms finished removing the sherd layer, f454. This really seemed to sit in a pit because there is a dramatic cut with the material in the rest of the locus. We have named the rest of the feature fill f488 and have begun removing this. We will watch the pottery from here to see if Khabur sherds continue to appear. It is important to pay attention to this cut in order to insure we really have ph4 throughout the rest of the area. [Input: N805MS.j]
2003-08-06 ms continued going down in f488 the cut. We seem to be reaching the end. This is a darker brown and somewhat damper accumulation. We are now seeing the cut in section. It is an interesting cut because it has a straight side rather than a round pit type. Also began removing a small patch of accumulation f372 which still exists in the locus. We did not do too much work in this area because of the pictures but will continue in the pit f481, and removing fl f451. [Input: N806MS.j]
2003-08-07 ms continued removing f372 for a while, but for the most part removed red black surface, f451 and are coming down on brown accumulation f491. Pit f481 is also practically removed. Uncovered more of f482 which may be more accumulation than wall. It will be looked at more on Saturday. [Input: N808MS.j]
2003-08-09 ms finished removing the fill f481 from pt f498, and the fill f459 from pt f460. The fill f481 was burnt ashy, red material. Under f491, the accumulation there is a red bricky material but no bricks seem to be there. It is very important that we understand what is happening as we go down in this area because of the association with the jar floor, a34, in k5. After meeting with gb, fab, jw and ms we decided to move in from the north and remove the entire section up to where the a34 installation begins in k5. This will give us a good section and we will have a better idea of what is happening and why the installation remained so intact. We began by removing a portion of f433 from the north. However, this appears to be part of a wall as there may be plaster on the south face. f433 is red bricky material and the north face was cut by the clay bin for the kilns, f155 which is why it was not seen before. This may also be related to the bricks of f457. [Input: N809MS.j]
2003-08-10 ms still some fill or pit f460 left. We removed everything to the north of a34 jar installation. Came down on sherd layer which is apparently the eastern continuation of f208. We are working around the wall f433 and moving carefully to have clean features and lots for analysis. Seem to have found the eastern facing face of w f433 seen in section. Will continue identifying and removing cuts and older features. Continued removing f372, accumulation to come down on f482, possible wall. [Input: N810MS.j]
2003-08-11 jw Mizar continued to remove the accumulation f491 west of the expected west face of wall f433. More of the pebble and sherd floor f208 was exposed, as was a new pot-smash f504. Tomorrow we expect that he will have excavated far enough east to reach the bricks of f433. Ramadan finished removing the small platform of accumulation f372 and began excavating north from the south edge of f491. [Input: N811jw.j]
2003-08-12 jw Mizar contined to excavate the south face of f491. No bricks from the expected west face of f433 were encountered. However the section revealed a clear demarcation between accumulation f491 and a cleaner browner one below, designated f509. Ramadan continued to excavate the bulk of f491, moving from south to north in successive pick runs. Late in the day, he encountered a dense reddish accumulation, designated f509. It runs N-S and if it were the residue from a wall, it would be in an appropriate location to form the eastern boundary of a room containing the jars of a34 which have been exposed just to the west in k5. Mizar also removed 20 cm of the pit fill f420 which occupies the space between the jars a34 and the block of accumulation f491 to the east. [Input: N812jw.j]
2003-08-12 jw Stef continued pick runs through accumlation f486, belived to lie atop the floor of an enclosed room. i270, a cylinder seal, i271 a bowl, and i272 a large cup (left in place) were found. There are sherds from at least one large jar decorated with a rope motif, but most of the sherds are from more delicate vessels. [Input: N812jw.j]
2003-08-13 jw Mizar continued to excavate an exploratory trench along the northern edge, while Ramadan concentrated on excavating from the top down of accumulation f491, which covers the northern two-thirds of the locus. We did not see any evidence that the line of reddish accumulation extended past the limits observed at the end of yesterday. gg took an overhead photograph of this locus supplemented by features in k4, k5 and k14 to show the patches of red material scattered with gray accumulations. It is hoped that they may guide our excavations in search of Phase 2 architecture. Item 273 consists pieces of a large shallow bowl of unusual design. [Input: N813jw.j]
2003-08-14 jw we assigned Aldare, a detailed pick trainee, to work with Ramadan to accelerate the pace of excavation of accumulation f509. An unusually large quern i275, laying on its side, was partially exposed. It is roughly 60cm square and at least 30 cm deep. Mizar excavated the fill of a pit f514 which had been cut into the NW corner of f491 and f509. [Input: N815jw2.j]
2003-08-16 jw Work here proceeded at a slightly quicker pace today. Mizar finished excavating the fill from a very large pit. We attempted to determine whether the line of reddish material along the south baulk f508 was a wall top. Pick runs from the east and west revealed that it was most likely a brick wall. If so, it would probably form the eastern boundary of the space to the west in k5 that contains the large jars. Ramadan continued to remove the accumulation f509. fab postulated that the large stone basin i279 may have been the socket for the main gate. Both this and a slightly smaller hollowed out stone in k4 have inside diameters of 30cm, which would accommodate the large posts expected to be at either end of a formal entrance door. [Input: N816jw2.j]
2003-08-17 jw Ramadan and Muhammad Kher continued to clear the accumulation f509 found in most of the locus. Mizar tried with some success to find the north, east and west faces of wall f508. After the meeting with gb et. al., we decided to remove all of accumulation f521 which overlaid the jar room, a34. Mizar and Muhammad Hair did so in an afternoon work session, finding the west face of wall f520 in the process, as well as the transitional sherd and stone layer to large stones below the bricks. [Input: N817jw.j]
2003-08-17 ms finished removing fill f459 from pit cut f460, just north of wall f509. Really pressing to find the west face of f509. This would hopefully be the eastern edge of the jar installation a34 in k5. Slowed down by 3-D photography so moving into wall from east. Also attempting to find S face of possible was f433. This may only be one or two courses thick - damaged by bin, f155. [Input: N817jw.j]
2003-08-18 jw Ramadan and Muhammed Kher leveled and scraped the accumulation f509 throughout the entire locus, which contained relatively large quantities of sherds. In doing so they positively identified the east face of the N-S wall f508, which was cut by a succession of pits. Upon scraping after the last pick run, we noticed a N-S line of bright red plaster f527 which demarked the east face. The color of the plaster was similar to that which coated E-W wall f483 in k13. At the end of the day we finished excavating here for the MZ16 season, forgoing the opportunity to reach the associated floor this year. With regards to the red line, jw noticed a 20cm segment of it several days ago, but attempts to trace it further were fruitless. [Input: N818jw.j]
Strategy (projected or implemented) 2001-07-31 vp we will continue to dig the N half of locus. [Input: L823vp1.j]
2003-08-12 jw on N813 we will excavate f491 carefully to expose f509 from the east and west so that we can determine whether it is a wall or a pocket of red accumulation from some other source. [Input: N812jw.j]
2003-08-12 jw on N813, Muhammad Hair and Abd el-Rahman will be detailed to us from A10 and will contine to excavate f486. We will contine to immediately analyze pottery lots to get a positive identification of the phase. The red plaster on the south face of brick wall f485 continues to appear across its entire length. [Input: N812jw.j]
2003-08-14 jw we will continue to excavate carefully with big picks so that we can define the extent of the collection of large jars which begins along the east edge of k5 and extends into k15. [Input: N815jw2.j]
2003-08-17 jw tomorrow we will take the final photo in the daily progress series, remove the camera mount, take the 3-D photos of the jars, then remove the entire assemblage of jars to conservation for restoration. [Input: N817jw.j]

Relays (applicable to elements) 2001-08-01 vp r415 (##### ##### - ##### / Relay location: k15) [Input: L813JW3.R]
Notes on volumetric localization 2001-07-26 jlw this locus was on a steep slope. We measured the elevation at several points, but recorded the highest one for the record (9024) as the starting point for excavating the topsoil, f306, in order to keep the features underneath in a logical sequence of elevations. However, some features in the lower western portion were discovered, measured, and recorded before the east part of the topsoil, f306, was fully excavated. As a result there is a greater variation in elevations of early features than would otherwise be expected. After the locus was leveled, all elevations fit the order in which they were discovered. Time Sequencing

Roster Date Author Record
Notes on time sequencing 2003-08-13 jw mkb and jo are analyzing sherds from f491. In one q-lot, q1115, they noticed a mix of Phase 4 and Phase 2 sherds. We believe that this occurred as a result of the excavation of a west to east trench alongside wall f433, to inspect a possible plaster face on it southern side. The trench is about a meter deep and the lot contained sherds from throughout. We will modify our strategy to excavate horizontal slices within the trench, each with its own q-lot, now that we know that we are transitioning phases. [Input: N813jw.j]
